She was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu and has a sister Maya S. Krishnan who is also a singer. "Music is my saviour. Music stayed as my lifeline and helped me get through major heartbreaks. Music brought me work and friends. I attribute my life to it. It started when I was barely starting to talk My guru, the late Srimati Vijayalakshmi Ramaseshan was more like my grandma. I use to sit in her class with my elder sister and sing along. I then started learning short Bharathiyar songs to sing in school competitions and that's how it started.", she says.
